Hijo de La Luna | Moon's child

music, spanish, culture, lyrics1 min read

Oftentimes I think of all the flavors and context that gets lost between cultures.

Hijo de la Luna (Moon's child in Spanish) is a beautiful song and this is my attempt to make it available for those that don't speak Spanish. You can always use some translation tool, but until those tools can provide context here's my humble attempt:

Note: This is not a literal translation. It's my interpretation.

1Tonto el que no entienda
2Cuenta una leyenda
3Que una hembra gitana
4Conjuró a la luna hasta el amanecer

Foolish those who won't understand
as the legends says
a gipsy maiden
conjured the moon until dawn

1Llorando pedía
2Al llegar el día
3Desposar un calé

In tears she asked
as the day arrived
to marry a Kale

Note: A Kale is an endonym for Spanish Roma.

1Tendrás a tu hombre piel morena
2Desde el cielo habló la luna llena
3Pero a cambio quiero
4El hijo primero
5Que le engendres a él

You'll have your dark skinned man
from the heavens spoke the Moon
in exchange I demand
the first born
you beget by him

Note: italics means the Moon speaking

1Que quien su hijo inmola
2Para no estar sola
3Poco le iba a querer

And by immolating her child
to avoid loneliness
she wouldn't get attached

1Luna quieres ser madre
2Y no encuentras querer
3Que te haga mujer
4Dime luna de plata
5Que pretendes hacer
6Con un niño de piel, Ah, ah
7Hijo de la luna

Moon, you want to be a mother
and you can't find solace
that makes you a woman
Tell me Silver Moon
what do you pretend
with a human child?
Moon child ah ah

Note: This is the chorus

1De padre canela nació un niño
2Blanco como el lomo de un armiño
3Con los ojos grises
4En vez de aceituna
5Niño albino de luna
6Maldita su estampa

From cinammon skinned father a child was born
white as stoat's loin
gray-eyed
instead of olive
albine Moon child
cursed countenance

1Este hijo es de un payo
2Y yo no me lo callo

This is a pale man's spawn
I won't stay silent

Note: italics means the father speaking

Chorus repeats

1Gitano al creerse deshonrado
2Se fue a su mujer cuchillo en mano
3De quién es el hijo?
4Me has engañado fijo
5Y de muerte la hirió

Gipsy believed dishonored
approached her with knife on hand
Who's the father?
I've been deceived
and mortally wounded her

Note: italics means the father speaking

1Luego se hizo al monte
2Con el niño en brazos
3Y allí le abandonó

Headed to the woods
with child in arms
he abandoned him

Chorus repeats

1Y las noches que haya luna llena
2Será porque el niño esté de buenas
3Y si el niño llora
4Menguará la luna
5Para hacerle una cuna
6Y si el niño llora
7Menguará la luna
8Para hacerle una cuna

And thus Full Moon nights
perhaps happen because the child is content
and if the child cries
the Moon wanes
to create a cradle for him
and if the child cries
the Moon wanes
to create a cradle for him

I hope you like it as much as I do.

Enjoy!
